Transport plant and equipment


Application

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to transport power generation plant and equipment.

Road transport is typically used to move light or heavy materials, equipment and power generation plant from one location to another, as required.

Competency in this unit requires the ability to plan and prepare for power generation plant and equipment for transportation, obtaining permits, loading and unloading power generation plant and equipment, securing load, operating transport vehicle and completing documentation. Individuals will, in general, work as an operator, in a power generation facility.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Note: Workplace practice

The application of the skills and knowledge described in this unit may require a licence or training permit to practice in the workplace where work is carried out on gas and electrical installations, or driving transport vehicles. Additional conditions may apply under state and territory legislative and regulatory licensing requirements.

Plan and prepare for transportation

1.1

Safety requirements are identified, in accordance with Work, Health and Safety (WHS)/Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations, legislative requirements, industry standards, codes of practice and workplace procedures

Transport requirements are confirmed from work scheduling, in accordance with workplace procedures

1.3

Characteristics of load are identified, in accordance with workplace procedures, to ensure appropriate loading and unloading procedures are followed

Obtain transportpermits

2.1

Permit forms are completed, in accordance with workplace procedures

2.2

Load is assessed so as not to exceed safe working capacity of vehicle, in accordance with workplace procedures, manufacturers' specifications and regulatory authority's requirements

Load/unload plant or equipment

3.1

Vehicle is inspected prior to loading, in accordance with workplace procedures and manufacturers' specifications

3.2

Start up, park up and shut down procedures are carried out on transport vehicle, as required, in accordance with manufacturers' specifications and workplace procedures

3.3

Power generation plant and equipment is loaded and unloaded safely, in accordance with workplace procedures, ensuring no injury to personnel or damage to property, equipment and load

3.4

Calculations on dimensions including height and width of load and transport vehicle requirements are made for oversized loads, in accordance with workplace procedures

3.5

Lashings are stored in transport vehicle, in accordance with workplace procedures

3.6

Load is secured to transport vehicle using appropriate securing equipment and is lashed to anchorage points, in accordance with securing systems, manufacturers' specifications and workplace procedures

Operate transport vehicle

4.1

Preoperational checks are carried out on power generation plant, in accordance with manufacturers' recommendations and workplace procedures

4.2

Attachments are set at correct height or position, and transport vehicle is driven, in accordance with traffic regulations, manufacturers' specifications and workplace procedures

4.3

Start up, park up and shut down procedures are carried out on transport vehicle, in accordance with manufacturers' recommendations and workplace

4.4

Hazards are identified and risk control measures are applied whilst transporting power generation plant and equipment on public roads and at work site, in accordance with workplace procedures

4.5

Traffic regulations are adhered to, in accordance with workplace procedures

Complete documentation

5.1

Post operational checks and minor maintenance is carried out on transport vehicle and accessories, in accordance with manufacturers' recommendations and workplace procedures

5.2

Documentation is updated and transport vehicle abnormalities and status is reported, in accordance with workplace
